MDI,France has developed and tested an air-powered vehicle which runs on compressed air.check their homepage for details:

What is more interesting is the news on their homepage which says an agreement has been signed with TATA.maybe the air-powered engine would be incorporated in future editions of the NANO.

It can actually be classified as an hybrid-engine and can run on gasoline,if necessary.
It is a two-stage engine in its air-run mode and has 8 chambers for compression and expansion.The ambient energy of the compressed air is used to achieve expansion.
No other details are given on their website.The performance is also unknown though googling about it came up with a few results that were mostly negative about the performance.
